Sebastine Ungrad
Sebastian Ungrad is a Berlin-based director, art director, and visual effects artist who has become increasingly associated with generative AI filmmaking and experimental storytelling.
Ungrad’s career spans traditional visual effects work, directing, and now pioneering AI-driven cinema. He is credited on projects such as Daisy (2025), a short film where he directed alongside Peter Thorwarth, known for Netflix hits like Blood Red Sky and Blood and Gold. In this project, Ungrad and Thorwarth worked with real actors using motion capture headsets, blending live performance with AI-generated imagery. Earlier in his career, Ungrad directed the music video Mike Oldfield: Guilty (New Version) in 2013 and contributed visual effects to the TV mini-series Blackout in 2021. He has also worked as a CG artist on #Schwarze Schafe in 2025.
Ungrad operates under the creative identity “The Butcher’s Brain” and is connected to Storybook Studios, a company dedicated to merging proprietary AI technology with entertainment to redefine storytelling. At Storybook Studios, he serves as an art director, helping to shape immersive experiences where AI is not just a tool but part of the narrative itself. His portfolio includes experimental projects like The Last Pencil, which imagines a pencil that remembers everyone who held it across forty years, and Drift Split, a trailer concept about a mother navigating parallel worlds after a car crash while pursued by guardians of reality.
Ungrad’s work has been showcased in AI film festivals and community talks, including Berlin events hosted by LTX Studio, where he has spoken about the future of AI-generated TV and film. He is recognized as part of a growing movement of artists who treat AI as a co-creator, pushing the boundaries of cinematic language and visual experimentation.
In essence, Sebastian Ungrad bridges traditional filmmaking and cutting-edge AI, positioning himself as both a technologist and a storyteller. His projects often explore surreal, horror-inflected, or speculative themes, and his role at Storybook Studios places him at the forefront of AI-driven narrative innovation.
